SPRINGTIME IN THE ROCKIES & LOOK WHAT I FOUND!!!

It is "Springtime in the Rockies", and here in Colorado not much is blooming yet. But, check out the color of that sky when the sun was coming up this morning. We awoke with new snow on the ground and glorious sunshine.

The only thing blooming in our yard is our pear tree. It is hard to tell the white puffy blossoms from the snow!

The only green in the yard is from the willow tree. But, I think, Mother Nature is telling us Spring is on the way.

A friend and I went out this morning in the sun and snow to do a little junk hunting, and look what I found. See that name at the bottom of this tin candy box - yes it says, "Salmagundi". I didn't buy it even though I really wanted to. It seemed a little pricey; but after I got home, I couldn't stand it and had to go back to get it.

I did a little research first on the picture thinking that it was from the Art Nouveau period and had the look of the artist, Mucha. And it is from a picture entitled, "Zodiac le Plume" by Alphonse Mucha.
In checking out the Whitman Candy Company, I discovered that in 1924 they introduced a special line of art boxes, including Salmagundi. They state that they considered it an exotic Art Nouveau design from the mysterious east. I'm not sure Mucha ever worked in the east, but the woman depicted is rather mysterious.

The box shows some wear, but I still think it is beautiful and it did have my name written all over it!!!!

Thanks for stopping by,
Sally

  1. It's amazing to see snow on the trees that are blooming! You are not going to believe this (or maybe you will, since you probably realize how much stuff I have). I have that exact same tin candy box. Yours is in much better condition than mine. (Mine had been in an outdoor storage building at my parent's home). So interesting to learn something about it. And yes, it certainly does have your name written all over it! laurie

  5. Mornin' my friend,

I'm just coming from leaving a message on your toile post! What lovely photos...isn't that snow pretty against that fabulous blue sky!

Girl, I can't believe that you found that beautiful little box with your name on it!!! I giggled when you told about just having to make a trip back to get it! There's just no way that you could pass it up...it does have your name written all over it...wink! Hehe!!! Not only is it beautiful but it also has some interesting history to it! I love the mosaic looking pattern on it...and the lady is a bit mysterious...but ohhh sooo beautiful! I think you were meant to have that pretty little box...so happy for you, Sweetie!!!

Well my friend, we are sitting tight at home today...I think we're prepared for the blizzard that northeastern Colorado is supposed to have today and tomorrow. In fact, Russell stayed home from work today so that he wouldn't get stuck in town and seperated from me. They always close that stretch of road down in bad weather that runs between Sterling and our place. They're predicting lots of snow (which we could use the moisture)and lots of wind...that's the bad part! But we'll be fine...hehe! Ya'll stay warm and be safe!

    Love ya,
    Chari

  7. Sally, wow! You still have snow? It's been warm here and jackets aren't even needed anymore, though we had a rain storm yesterday. That Whitman box sure has your name written all over it. I am glad you got it, it's very pretty!...Christine

  12. Mornin' Sally...

Just wanted to stop by to see how ya'll faired through our big Historic Blizzard...hehe! It was pretty nasty here yesterday...the wind just blew all day long and then with the snow, you know how that can get! I think we got about 8" but the sun is already out and shining today! I suspect that the snow won't stay long! Russell and I had a grand ol' time of it yesterday though...we kept a fire in the wood burning stove, made a big pot of homemade chicken soup, and watched movies!!!

Did ya'll get much snow? Have a fabulous Friday, Sweetie! It was so nice hearing from you!!!

    Love ya,
    Chari

  13. Love the box! It is beautiful. And I love that it has your name on it. I laughed too when you said you had to go back & buy it. I've learned my lesson, so now when I see something I really love, I usually will get it so I don't have any regrets later. Also, when I lived down in San Diego area there was a small craft store that was called Salmagundi. Don't know if it is still there, but it was in Lemon Grove, CA. Everytime I see your name, it makes me think of home. Have a wonderful weekend!

  18. Lovely nature photos! Thank God all the snow has melted here and we are looking forward to Spring-like weather.

Did I ever tell you my sister's yearbook is named Salmagundi? They had a Salmagundi day when she was in high school.

Love the box. I really like Art Noveau.
