We're home again after our road trip across Kansas. We didn't get out of Colorado our first day out as we stopped and stayed the night with Bob's sister. She is a wonderful cook, so the evening was enjoyably spent with food and conversation. We left early the next morning as we wanted to go to a antique auction in western Kansas. It turned out to be a huge event with all kinds of antiques auctioned off that had been collected over the years. There were lots of people - dealers, collectors, and just interested observers.
As usual at an auction of this type, the prices were all over the place. A five-stack barrister's bookcase sold for $1200 and a cast-iron windmill weight sold for $700. But, there were also bargains to be had. I bought this box of dishes for $3.50. Bob bought a Mission oak rocker for $20 and an old record cabinet for $4.
The next day we headed to Kansas City to visit friends that we have known for years and years. At one point when our kids were all little, we lived across the street from each other. Mary is also a great cook, plus they know of all the great ethnic restaurants in Kansas City. So, once again, we were fed well!
A trip to Kansas City would not be complete without a trip to Mary Carol Garrity's store, Nell Hill's.
I didn't take any pictures inside, as I was too engrossed viewing all of the treasures and the wonderful decorating ideas.
One of the new sets of dishes displayed throughout the store were these brown transferware with peacocks. I bought just one plate, but would have loved the whole set!!!
Another favorite shopping experience in Kansas City is the Mission Street Antique Mall. We spent an entire afternoon there where I bought these three pieces of antique brown transferware for my collection.
Sad to say, eventually we had to return home. The 650-mile trip back in one day can be boring just looking at wheat fields, but the 12 hours went fairly fast. It is always fun to get out into the world, but also feels good to get back to your own bed and shower!!

It looks like you got some goodies...love all of your glassware! Where was the auction at? I hadn't heard anything about it. Do you know...I've been in Colorado for nearly 9 years and have yet to go to an auction or estate sale! Most all of the estate sales around here are just farm equipment. I've heard of Nell Hill, you'll have to tell me a little more about the place and where it's located. Girl, I just love your new brown transferware plate with the peacock on it...as soon as I seen it, I thought how perfect it would be to go in my gallery wall in the living room. Especially since that large piece in there has a peacock in it! I'd love to have a plate like that! Does she have an online site? Ohhh boy, I'm just full of questions today, aren't I...hehe!

I would so love to shop @ Nell Hill's! Love the peacock plates. My grandparents had a pair of peacocks on their ranch & they alwasy remind me of them.

We haven't been to an auction in a long while. Some of the best things we've found, have been in those boxes, like you bought.

Hi...so happy to be back in Blogland...nothing is more fun then a road trip...ofcourse my days of sitting in a car for 12 hours in over...Maybe because our mode of transportation is a VW Bug...not too comfortable sitting in one for all those hours....Our flight home was only 1 1/2 hours (way better then 18 hours on the road) but when we got to Atlanta and landed there was no place to park the plane....so we sat on the tarmac for 40 minutes...that was not fun...

Welcome to KC! Don't you just love Mary Carol, store...I usually stop by once a month, usually on Monday and Mary Carol is there hard at work. I was at Mission Antique Mall on Friday and had lunch at First Watch. When you come back to visit your friends you must try to visit the Atchison store and spend the day there....you wil love it......love your blog..Pat H
