A couple of years ago, when my mother-in-law was downsizing, Bob brought home this box.
The inside graphic tells the story of the box -- cigar seconds (or throw-outs) -- off colors and shapes, but half price!
But what made it really interesting were all of the old pictures housed inside. Bob's mother said the box came to her from her mother-in-law. Most of the pictures are not identified.
The picture below, however, identifies the old folks on the front row left as Eliza and Elijah Saulmon (Bob's great, great grandparents) and the tall guy in the back row is Louis Heritage Saulmon (Bob's great grandfather). Love those old-fashioned first names.
But who do these adorable faces belong to?
This is a great reminder that I need to be more diligent in documenting our current family photos.

I was at my mom's yesterday and she had just cleaned out two of her old photo albums. She sent a picture to an old childhood friend for her 90th birthday and received such a nice letter back from her. The pictures she saved do not have names on the back, but I should have her write them, even though I recognize most of her relatives. She has some older photographs of my grandfather's family, and it sure would be nice to have names for all his siblings. I think there were 12 or 13 of them! In fact, next time I get her groceries, I'll have her tell me names of ones she can remember!♥♫
ReplyDeleteMy cousins were here and the oldest cousin brought several pictures. We have no idea who some of them are and there is no one left to ask. That is sad. Love your old family pics and the cigar box. xo Diana
ReplyDeleteWe have so many photos going way back and we have no idea who the people are in the shots. My grandmother on my mother's side was pretty good at writing on the backs of the photos and sometimes writing funny little stories. She would have made a great blogger!

my mother was famous for writing names and dates on the back of pictures which is great now when I look through the picture boxes....She labeled all the kids in my 3rd grade class photo....we just had our 45th reunion and it was fun to see how these people look now and back in the 1950's....most have not aged gracefully :)
ReplyDeleteThis is a true treasure box! What wonderful photos. I have many old ones from my family, luckily my Mum put them all in photo albums and labelled them. I truly treasure them, they bring back so many memories. Thank you for sharing!
ReplyDeleteMy always told me to do this...she was so good about it. I really have not done it enough. I was always sure that I would remember (which I now do not), but I never thought about future generations!

ReplyDeleteEach generation in my family on my father's side had a memory keeper who took photos and identified each one. Unfortunately sometimes that meant writing on the backs, but we have restored those. Surprisingly it is the ones from the 1950's that are vague as to who the photos are. You have a wonderful group.
