HUNTING AND GATHERING

Just a normal amount of 'hunting and gathering' going on in the Salmagundi household.

When we went to Round Top, Texas last fall, my one goal was to come home with a dough bowl.  But, the lowest price I found was $95 -- I figured with patience, I could find one cheaper; so I came home without a dough bowl.  Sure enough, I recently found this one for under $30 at an antique show in Pueblo, Colorado.  It is heavy and has a nice patina, and just the size I was looking for!
This past week, we had to go to Denver to deliver one of my quilts to be photographed for a new book.  After a nice lunch with our son who was on spring break from teaching, we did what the three of us have always done -- go antiquing.  I vowed I wasn't going to buy any more brown transferware -- my goal was to find a plaid lunch box.  Of course, right away I found a piece of brown transferware in my under $20 price range.
It's a 9" vegetable bowl in the 'Dado' pattern with a wonderful "cookie" of a sailing ship.
It also has this wonderful border on the outside.
So, I came home with a bowl, but no plaid lunch box.  The boxes I saw were $40, so that remains a quest for another day.

Speaking of plaid -- I recently completed these plaid pillows to go on the twin beds (see post here), and have been thinking and looking for months for something to hang over the beds to warm the space with all of the neutral bedding.
I should always remember to shop at home first.  It finally dawned on me that I had this wonderful antique quilt in my quilt stash.  Yes, I have a very LARGE stash of both antique and contemporary quilts.
In the 1990s I bought 81 Log Cabin blocks of all different sizes for $10 for the lot. They were made from glorious 19th century wools; but the sizes made it impossible to set them together in a quilt which is probably why they were still in block form.  After working on them for a month trying not to destroy the integrity of the time period, I set them together in the 'straight furrow' pattern of a traditional Log Cabin quilt.
You can see all of the wonderful 19th century plaid fabrics in this quilt.
Last night, we hung the quilt and it was just what the room needed.

Your pillows turned out great Sally! That room really came together with the gorgeous vintage quilt!

What a beautiful dough bowl- I can't believe it was only $30! That is a great price! Love those filled with pine cones and greenery in winter. Of course it would look real pretty too,if it was used for it's intended purpose- can smell the break baking already!

Will you be going to the quilt show in Pueblo this weekend?

Hi Sally! Oh, look at that beautiful transferware bowl you found! I love it! Your pillows are so pretty too and that quilt! You are so good and congratulations on your quilt about to be published!
I was cleaning out where I sew and going through old fabric and found some little squares I had embroidered in 1975 to make a little quilt for my daughter. It's a days of the week and I'm missing Sunday! But guess what? I used polyester fabric! So, I'm going to try and do something small with it just so I can pass it on to my grand daughter. Wish you were my neighbor, I'd pick you most glorious quilt brain! :)
Be a sweetie and I hope you had a wonderful Easter,
Shelia ;)

Shopping at home is always the most economical way to find the perfect thing. The quilt looks great! Spring break was over much too soon for me because all the best weather for working outside was the week BEFORE. Still lots to do outside, watering being the No. 1 priority as it's been so dry here. I'm ready for that early finish in May!♥♫

Ohhhh Sally...I think your "log cabin" quilt is FABULOUS!!! And...you are sooo right...it's perfect for your guest room! I really do love all of the beautiful plaids that you have used in that room! It's gorgeous, my friend! You did GOOD!!! I think your quilt is the perfect piece and such beautiful art...I love how it looks with your new plaid bed linens!!! Thanks for sharing your new pretties with us today!

How are you doing, dear friend? I hope that my note finds you all doing well. We are doing okay. Today I'm just trying to stay warm. The morning started out very humid and foggy...something that is strange to our area. It has been rainy and windy of course...eeks! Take care, my friend!

Love ya,
Chari

that quilt is so gorgeous! I'm literally ready to jump through my computer to get a closer look :) log cabin quilts are my absolute favorite. I was at round top just last Thursday and saw a beautiful antique log cabin quilt but sadly it just was not in my budget to acquire it. Thanks so much for sharing this treasure!

After losing you on another linky party, I'm so glad to find you on Common Ground. I loved your picture of this magnificent quilt. I love quilts, but only have 7-10--all made by members of my family! I even have one I made, but didn't quilt myself. I hired a church group to hand-quilt it for me. I love it of course. I love you dough bowl, $30, seriously you stole that bowl! Good for you. highpointcircle
