VINTAGE CHRISTMAS MEMORIES

We've spent this week decorating for Christmas.  And after 55 years of marriage, it is so fun to relive Christmases Past as we unpack each decoration.  Below, are some of the vintage decorations that we have picked up over the years while out antiquing and some that belonged to my parents.  My mother always decorated so beautifully for Christmas -- it was a magical time!
I'm particularly partial to the balls that are indented in design and the ones from WWII that have the cardboard hangers
                      INDENTED ORNAMENTS                             WWII ORNAMENTS
GLASS TREE TOPPERS                   GLASS BALL ROPING
On a future post, I'll show you the two trees decorated with more vintage ornaments.

But now, something vintage with a story -- you probably know we have a story about almost everything in our home!
In 1971 the week before Christmas, our then 3-year old son and I were out doing errands, and we stopped by the dry cleaners to pick up the cleaning.  Why the cleaners was selling Santa Clauses, I don't know; but they were and our son (the Prince of Tantrumland) latched on to one.
When time to leave, he wasn't about to put Santa down and proceeded to throw a doozy of a tantrum.  I don't know what the child psychologists of today say about tantrums, but my mode of operation then was to get him out of the situation in anyway available.
So, I did what any panicky mother would do -- I paid for the Santa and the dry cleaning and got the screaming kid with a death grip on Santa out of there!!!!
No harm done, I guess, as I now have a vintage Santa apparently worth more than the $3.00 I paid plus the priceless memory ----

and, our son learned how to behave eventually.

What a sweet memory Sally! And such dear ornaments. I take each of ours out and immediately remember the year we bought it, who we were with & where it was. Some of those memories are painful but most are sweet. It's a joy!
Hoping your Christmas season is going well and and that you are enjoying each day!
Love,
Sue

I enjoyed the story about your boy, and knowing him today makes the story even better. Well, I know him as well as an elementary teacher knows a high school colleague. My brother has a similar Santa, but I think his must be about 15-20 years older! I always loved it and wished it were mine.♥♫

That Santa is a lot like mine with the plastic face. Cute! I love old ornaments too. I don't remember the rope ones. Thanks for joining the party!

I loved your fun memory of your son and the Santa! You're right, those are worth more than $3 now!

The old shiny brites are the best, I decorated our tree with a lot of them today!

Hi, Sally girl....how fun is your collection of beautiful Christmas ornaments. I remember so many of this kind on my mother's tree. Over the years, most were broken and discarded.
I came over from Carlene's party...:)
Thanks so much for sharing...and....
stay warm.

Sally, what a beautiful display! I love the red transferware mixed in with your vintage treasures. I especially love the indented ornaments also. Not fortunate enough to find any with cardboard hangers yet. You tree topper collection is stunning! Love the vintage Santa and the story behind it! Thanks for linking to 'Creating Christmas'

Jann

I have a doggie brooch my dad bought for me at a shoe store. Don't know why I had to have it. It was probably 50 cents...but I am thrilled I have it now!

That was a sweet story.

LOL! Hi Sally and I love that story. I've had a few incidents with my children that are very similar. I love that little ole Santie and how in the world have you kept him so clean!? I guess your little son didn't play with him much when he got home! ;)
I love your pretty hutch display too.
Be a sweetie,
Shelia ;)

I smiled as I read your Christmas memories. It's so nice when our decorations do more than just look pretty! Congratulations also on being married 55 years. I've been married for 29, and I so glad. Merry Christmas!

I enjoyed this...we had a tree topper like one of yours when I was young and then when my boys were young I purchased one similar to it because it brought back the memories :)

I love your vintage Christmas ornaments! The story about your son at the dry cleaners is one of those family stories we love to remember. Your Santa is very cute and worth more in memories therefore is priceless! Have fun decorating and remembering!

Oh my gosh did this post bring back memories! My grandmother had that very same Santa and when it appeared on the fireplace hearth you knew it was Christmas. A few years ago I started collecting finials and yours are beautiful! The one on the far right brought back memories as it stood at the top of our Christmas trees growing up. Thanks for posting at the Give Me The Goods party and for the trip down memory lane!
