A ROOSTER WITH A STORY

It is time for Sheila's (at Note Songs) rooster and chicken party. I don't have a flock of roosters in my house, but I do have one. And, there is a little story that goes with it - you know how Sheila loves a story.

My mother was raised during the hard times of The Depression on her grandparent's farm - you know - lots of hard work and no money. One of her jobs as a child was to kill and dress chickens for dinner. She hated it, and vowed that she would never, NEVER marry a farmer. Well, guess what, she married a farmer; but made my father promise that they would never have chickens. He kept his word.

But, mother must have missed the chickens; because our everyday dishes were decorated with chickens; she had tea towels with chickens on them; and she had a whole flock of these Royal Copley roosters and hens parading around the kitchen. Plus, every Sunday she could fry up the best chicken and gravy dinner imaginable.

See that piece of old wood in front of my rooster. On a recent trip to my great-grandparent's homestead, I picked up that piece from my mother's old childhood workplace - the chicken coop.

I am constantly reminded with warm feelings of my mother, her kitchen, and her chickens.

Sally, what a great story! My mother hated chickens, too, because she was pecked on the nose by one at her grandmother's house. And she also married a farmer and had chicken things. LOL!

I still have one of her roosters (which she got on her honeymoon), and I treasure it.

Love yours. Neat post.

XO,

Sheila :-)

What a great story! I remember seeing my mother wring a chicken's neck, plunge him into a washpot of boiling water, pluck the feathers and have him fried and on the table in no time at all. This would happen when we'd go to her parents little farm for Sunday dinner. I like that you saved a piece of wood.

I have a story about that same rooster...when I was little I broke one my grandmas pair of these...so finally at Round top one year I found this same rooster to complete the pair that my Mom got when Grandma died..I was so glad to be able to *make it right* after all these years...my mom cried!

What a sweet story. My mom's brothers and sisters nicknamed her "Hendie", so she had lots of chickens in her kitchen too. I think that's why I've been drawn to them through the years. One of my nieces has her pieces now in her own kitchen. It's fun to visit and see those chickens from my childhood sitting atop my niece's cabinets.
Thanks for sharing this story.

I don't think my mother ever killed a chicken, but my grandmother certainly did. With 6 children, I'm sure she had chicken quite often. I love the story about your mother. Poor thing that's an awful job to have to do. And then you have to pluck it after killing it.:(
