VINTAGE VIGNETTE #9

My mother grew up on a farm learning to cook from her grandmother, who ruled the kitchen. Grandmother was notorious for being a fabulous cook, all on a wood cook stove, but thought that the nasty jobs like kitchen clean up, killing and dressing chickens, etc. was the domain of the assorted kids and grand kids. My mother vowed she would never, NEVER, marry a farmer as she wanted nothing more to do with killing chickens for supper! Well, she married a farmer, but my father promised there would never be any chicken slaughter in her future. Mother must have had a soft spot for chickens though, as she always had dishes decorated with chickens and had 2 or 3 chicken and rooster figurines sitting around in the kitchen. This one from the Royal Copley Company was a favorite.

The cookbooks were also my mothers from the World War II era - I love the title of the one called "Pie Marches On"! I found the large brown glass bottle in my Dad's workshop when I sold their house. I don't have any idea what kind of liquid it held or its intended use, but I loved the shape.

Lots of memories of my parents in this vignette.

Thanks for stopping by,
Sally

I think most held medicine or the hard stuff. smiles! I love the little chicken. I once cleaned a chicken and cooked it but I could not eat it when it was all done.

Give me an old cookbook anyday! Then to think they were your mothers, that's special! I think that bottle held acid. That's just my guess. ~ Robyn

The chicken I eat has NOTHING to do with live chickens; I buy mine in a grocery store, wrapped in plastic.

Good morning Sally :)

Very sweet vignette! I can't imagine having to kill a chicken when I was a kid or even now LOL Your mom had the right idea by marrying someone that wouldn't make her do that ;)

Loved the chevy Suburban story!! We had one too :)

Sally, I think my mother had a rooster just like that! My sister took it when mother died. I love that pretty wood box that holds the cookbooks. This is just such a wonderful vignette of reminders from your past. laurie

Love your collection! I agree with the others on the original use of the brown bottle. Does it have a date on the bottom? We have about a dozen of these bottles that we found in a basement that was used to make wine back during prohibition! Some of the bottles still had wine in them! Mary Ann

Hi Sally
I spent a lot of time with my grandparents while growing up. They had chickens and I well remember the Saturday ritual of chicken plucking!

J and I didn't have them on the farm. In fact, it was a beef cattle farm and we didn't butcher our own beef.

I love your vignette and the memories you shared.
